Guangzhou New Library is one of the four representative public cultural buildings on the city’s new central axis plaza. It boasts one of the largest urban public libraries in China with 3.5 million volumes of books. The reading areas are all in open-shelf layout and employ the leading automatic sorting system and 24-hour automatic borrowing/returning system. With beautiful books as design concept, the building skin features the texture of stacked natural stone and the sculptural appearance resembling piled of opened books. The tilted building volume conveys a sense of our times, while the piles of opened books shape up a ten-floor shared atrium and a series of flowing spaces. This showcases the open and circulating features of typical Lingnan architecture and the open, communicative and sharing features of the modern public libraries. Several sunken greening courtyards on F1 bring sunlight and fresh air into the underground spaces and make the entire building dynamic and vibrant.
