In 1950s, Mr. Lin Kemin, the modern architecture pioneer of China, was instructed to found the Design Division of Construction Engineering Bureau of Guangzhou People’s Government, the predecessor of Guangzhou Design Institute. Afterwards, the organization was renamed three times, respectively i.e. Design Institute of Construction Bureau of Guangzhou People’s Government, Guangzhou Architectural Design Company, and Guangzhou Urban Architecture Design Institute. During this period, it participated in the renovation of a series of old buildings and the design of factory, residential and cultural buildings, such as the renovation of Nanfang Building, Sun Yatsen Memorial Hall and Guangxiao Temple, and the design of Guangzhou Cement Plant, Overseas Chinese Residential Compound, Binjiang Residential Compound, Guangzhou Gymnasium (old), Guangdong Science Museum, and Guangdong Museum of Geology. The most representative project was Sino-Soviet Friendship Building. The design diverted from the conventional form of the Soviet Union Exhibition Hall in Beijing and Shanghai and instead followed an extremely forward-looking design principles that focused on aesthetics, simplicity, cost-effectiveness and adaption to future demands.
In 1960s,In 1960s, Guangzhou Urban Architecture Design Institute was renamed Guangzhou Design Institute after the merger with Guangzhou Industrial Design Institute and Survey Division of Guangzhou Urban Planning Commission. Since then the new name has been used until now. The first President was Mr. Lin Keming and the Chief Engineer She Junnan. During this period, GZDI designed Yangcheng Hotel (renamed Dongfang Hotel now), Guangdong Guesthouse, Yuexiu Hotel, and Exhibition Hall of National Peasant Movement Training Institute (Guangzhou). Yet the most representative ones are Guangzhou Hotel, the highest building in China then when the corresponding technical specifications and practical experiences for reference were still not available, and Guangzhou Friendship Theater, China’s first theater that combined the modern building with the Chinese courtyard and an example for the architecture education and movie theater design then.
In 1970s, GZDI became the first pilot for market-oriented operation in the survey and design industry of Guangdong Province. During the period, GZDI undertook the design tasks for a number of foreign trade projects to promote the foreign trade development in China, such as Liuhua Hotel, New Building of Dongfang Hotel, Chinese Export Commodities Fair, and Guangzhuo Railway Station, exemplarily practicing the basic principles of pragmatism, cost-effectiveness and aesthetics advocated in the modern Lingnan building design. In addition, GZDI took the lead to expand business abroad and participated in the design of a number of foreign projects, such as China’s embassy in West Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Greece, Cyprus, Kuwait, Thailand, Japan and Australia, and Gabon Health Center. These projects were highly acclaimed by the Chinese and international building industry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The most representative project is Chinese Export Commodities Fair for which GZDI applied extensive glass walls the first time in China over the opposition of others, demonstrating its courage and determination of innovation at an era of closed society.
In 1980s, GZDI was one of the design institutes that firstly received Grade A survey and design qualification certificate in China. It was also one of the country’s four leading design institutes designated by the State Development Planning Commission (SDPC) for tourist hotels thanks to its leading tourist hotel design expertise in China. The representative projects include Zhongshan Hot Spring Hotel, White Swan Hotel and China Hotel. White Swan Hotel is of epoch-making significance in the history of GZDI and even the modern Lingnan architecture. It boasts the first modern five-star hotel of international standard in the Chinese mainland, while its central gardening piece “water of hometown” of distinctive Lingnan style enjoys great reputation among overseas Chinese. The design of the Hotel was fully recognized by an editorial on the People’s Daily on May 21, 1980. Guangzhou Tianhe Sports Center was another representative project during that period. It is the first once-completed large sports center in China and the first Chinese sports building that won the silver prize of IAKS Award by International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS).
In 1990s, GZDI seized the opportunities brought by the opening-up and reform policies and independently designed a great number of public buildings, including Guangzhou Book Center acclaimed as the First Book City in China; Teemall, the first large commercial complex in Chinese mainland, as well as Guangzhou Municipal People’s Congress Office Building, Guangdong TV Center, Guangdong Museum of Art, Guangzhou Ocean Park, Hotel Canton, Jianlibao Building, Guangzhou Department Store Building, and Hotel Landmark Canton. These projects are milestones that record the urban development and progress and contribute to the inheritance of the modern Lingnan architecture philosophy.
Since the twenty-first century, the concepts of green, emission reduction, energy efficiency and environmental protection have become the mainstream in the engineering field of the world. GZDI proactively respond to the trend by pursuing the technological innovation and working with international design firms on landmark projects. The Pearl River Tower, the world’s first super high-rise integrating 13 cutting-edge green technologies, stands at the forefront of the green, high-end and low-carbon design. The Canton Tower, the world’s highest TV tower when completed, is an exemplary green project listed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD). Taikoo Hui, the highest-standard international shopping mall and office building in Guangzhou, won LEED gold certification. Guangzhou International Sports Arena, China’s first sports venue that meets NBA standard venue requirements, won the Second Prize of the National Green Building Innovation Award. Guangzhou Development Center Building represents the world’s first application of movable sun shades on super high rise. Guangzhou Pazhou Poly International Plaza is the first building in South China that adopts the under-floor air distribution system. Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, the largest ocean-themed resort around the globe, with the cutting-edge technological equipment and avant-garde design concepts, sets up five Guinness World Records.
In future, we will continue providing the construction engineering services. While focusing on the architecture, we will pursue the synergetic development of diverse businesses such as municipal projects and EPC(Engineer, Procure, Construct), and provide full-life-cycle and all-around intellectual services in the construction engineering field. Our goal is to make GZDI a world-class design group by implementing the people- and synergy-oriented management philosophy, the green, innovative, energy-efficient and intelligent technological approach, and the services that excel in concept and quality.
