“New Challenge – Net Zero Carbon Architectural Design” Seminar Held at Guangzhou Library

The seminar of“New Challenge – Net Zero Carbon Architectural Design” sponsored by Zero CarbonGreen Building Technology Promotion Committee of China Engineering &Consulting Association Architecture Sub-committee, Guangzhou EngineeringGeotechnical Survey & Design Association and GZDI was held in the afternoonof Mar. 7 at Guangzhou Library.

The seminar was attended by over 400people including Cai Ying, Deputy Director-General of Guangdong Housing andUrban-Rural Development Department, Chen Zhen, Secretary General of ChinaEngineering & Consulting Association Architecture Sub-committee, ZhouHelong, President of GZDI, Zero Carbon Green Building Technology Promotion Committeeexperts and members, relevant officials from Guangzhou Land Resources and PlanningCommission, Guangzhou Housing and Urban-Rural Construction Committee, and Guangdong-HongKong-Macao Building Industry Association, as well as architects from variousdesign institutes. The seminar was chaired by Ma Zhencong, President of GuangzhouEngineering Geotechnical Survey & Design Association.

Inhis opening address, Cai Ying, Deputy Director-General of Guangdong Departmentof Housing and Urban-Rural Development, pointed out that net zero carbonarchitectural design highly corresponds to the development idea in the new eraand the vision of developing a beautiful China proposed at the 19th CPC National Congress, and called upon experts to contribute inspiring ideas,the housing and urban-rural development authorities at various levels andindustry associations to strengthen publicity and promotion efforts, and thearchitects to shoulder more responsibilities and being pioneering andinnovative, so as to explore a net zero carbon design approach that isadaptable to the reality of Guangdong and make the province even more beautiful.

Mr.Edward Mazria, a renowned architect of the USAand the founder of Architecture 2030, gave a thematic report on “China: ProvidingGlobal Leadership” at the seminar. With explicit and detailed data, he analyzedthe necessity and urgency of net zero carbon design worldwide, and presented specificsteps and ways to realize such design in view of Guangzhouand China’sreality. Che Xueya, Director of Zero Carbon Green Building Technology PromotionCommittee and Deputy Chief Architect of Tongji Architectural Design (Group)Co., Ltd., Jiao Jian, Deputy Director of Zero Carbon Green Building TechnologyPromotion Committee and Deputy Chief Architect of Beijing Institute ofArchitectural Design, and Huang Huijing, Deputy Chief Architect of GZDI,respectively shared their ideas, practices and cases via speeches themed on “ZeroCarbon Building – New Challenge to Building Life”, “Urban Ecological Planningand Evaluation” and “Green Mark, Green Imagination”.

At the closing speech, ChenZhen, Secretary General of China Engineering & Consulting Association ArchitectureSub-committee, addressed that China,as an important global power to confront climate change, will be able to makemore contributions to the global environment only after realizing its own commitment.Currently Chinastill faces huge challenges to comprehensive environment improvement and energyconservation and emission reduction. He called upon the architects of China to boldly take such historic mission andmake consistent efforts to conserve China’s clean water and greenmountains.
